Our Services

Here you will find the wide range of services offered by Redtail Equine Veterinary Service.

Serving Parker, Denver, Elizabeth, Kiowa, Castle Rock, and Surrounding Areas.

Wellness and Preventative Care

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A yearly physical exam and sedated oral exam can pick up early symptoms of many problems such as PPID (Equine Cushings Disease), heart murmurs/arrhythmia,  dental disease, and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. Many disorders have better outcomes if diagnosed and treated early.

Spring and Fall vaccines are also important in keeping your horse healthy. All horses should receive vaccines for Rabies, EEE/WEE, West Nile Virus, and Tetanus yearly and most horses should be vaccinated for Influenza and Equine Herpes Virus twice yearly. Other vaccines may also be appropriate for your horse depending on the environment, age, and travel requirements.

Dental Care

Dental Care

The more we learn about the health of our horses the more we realize how important dental care is when it comes to their comfort and overall health. A yearly sedated oral exam allows your vet to see many things that can be missed on a quick, unsedated exam. These findings include hooks and sharp points at the back of the mouth, fractured teeth, and dental carries (cavities) that can cause significant pain for your horse and even cause sinus infections. Can you find the molar fracture in the picture to left?

Internal Medicine

Redtail Equine is equipped to diagnose and treat many internal medicine problems including eye problems, endocrine disorders (Cushings and Equine Metabolic Syndrome), respiratory diseases including infections and RAO (aka Heaves), and many more. If you have any concerns about infectious diseases or other odd symptoms or behaviors we would love to hear about it.

Internal Medicine
Lameness

Lameness

Most horse owners hope that their horses never take a lame step, but if it does happen give us a call. Redtail Equine is equipped with the most up-to-date X-ray and Ultrasound equipment for diagnosis of soft tissue and bony injuries.

Lameness exams start with a thorough search for any heat, swelling, or wounds that might indicate the source of the problem followed by watching the horse move. Often diagnostic blocks (numbing areas of the leg) are then used to help determine the best place to X-ray, Ultrasound, or treat. Once the problem is diagnosed, various treatment or rehabilitation plans can be discussed to determine what is best for your horse and your situation.

Pre-purchase Exams

Buying a new horse is always exciting! Let us help protect your investment and give you the best chance of getting a horse that will be able to do the job you need it to do.

A pre-purchase exam is a thorough exam that includes an eye exam, exam of the heart and lungs, a neurologic exam, and an extensive lameness exam. Optional add-ons include x-rays, sedated oral exam, and reproductive ultrasound (if the horse may be used for breeding).

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a very versatile treatment modality and, in conjunction with traditional western medicine, can benefit many conditions. Acupuncture is often used to treat muscle/joint pain and stiffness in sport/performance horses and is very effective at treating arthritis pain in older horses. It has no withdrawal time when being used to treat show horses. In some cases, acupuncture can be used to lessen the dose of medications such as Bute that may cause unwanted side effects. In some horses, it can even prolong the effectiveness of other treatments such as joint injections.

Acupuncture can also be a beneficial adjunct in treating nerve damage, hives, mild colic, wounds, and many other conditions.

Diet/Nutrition Consultation

Diet/Nutrition Consultation

Have a horse that just will not lose weight? Or a horse that has been losing weight and shouldn't be? In these cases it is important to evaluate the horse's diet as well as checking for any other underlying causes of the weight problem.

Are you thinking that your horse might need a supplement for coat quality, hoof growth, gut health, or any other number of things but are overwhelmed by the number of choices? Dr. Wood is also happy to discuss supplements, which ones work, which ones don't, and when to use them.
