Care for Elderly Horses

While you want your horse to perform for as long as possible or be able to enjoy rides for years to come, aging is a natural process in life and an inevitable one. Unfortunately, at some point in your horse's life, it will become less active, possibly have pain, and be at risk for a variety of health conditions. Redtail Equine Veterinary Service, serving Denver, Parker, Elizabeth, Kiowa, Castle Rock, and the nearby CO regions, offers special care for these horses so you can help your trusty steed live a healthy, comfortable life into their golden years.

Diagnosing and Treating Arthritis

Care for Elderly Horses

Osteoarthritis is from wear and tear on the joints, and after all those rides and jumping, it's not surprising that a horse may develop arthritis. And this isn't the only musculoskeletal problem your horse is at risk of as it ages. Through a physical assessment and talking to you about your horse's condition, and possibly imaging, we can determine if your mare or stallion has any joint, soft tissue, or bone problems that could be causing him or her pain.

Evaluating for Age-Related Health Problems

As your horse ages, it becomes more at risk for certain health issues. Our equine vet can perform a full evaluation, complete with blood work and other diagnostics, to detect any problems early. Our vet can then intervene to manage the condition and slow progression. Keep in mind that early intervention often leads to the best prognosis, so it helps to have your horse see a vet for an annual visit.

We can also provide you with equine preventive care to discourage issues most common in horses of that breed.

Lifestyle Recommendations

Your horse has different needs as it ages. With that little bit of gray comes the need for diet changes, since your horse might not be as active as it once was. Along with a decrease in activity also comes new exercise recommendations, especially for its age and health, which our vet can explain.

Education

Dehydration, a loss of appetite, and various other concerns can signify a problem in your horse. We'll educate you on what to look out for as your horse ages, so you can intervene as necessary.
