Questions about Horse Dental Care

Your horse's teeth are constantly erupting and being worn down irregularly during chewing and other normal activities.  As a result, your horse must get regular dental care to keep their mouth comfortable. At Redtail Equine Veterinary Service, we're a mobile equine vet service that can come to your barn to provide horse dental care. Our vet regularly travels to Castle Rock, Elizabeth, Kiowa, Parker, Denver, and the surrounding area. Here's how she can help with your horse's dental needs.

Why is my horse having trouble chewing its food?

Horses' teeth are continually erupting. As a result, teeth can become wavy or form hooks and sharp points that make it difficult to eat or wear a bit comfortably. Horse dental care eliminates the conditions that make it difficult for a horse to chew their food or cause performance issues.

How often should a horse have a dental exam?

Your horse should get a dental exam at least once a year. More frequent dental care may be necessary if your horse is experiencing a chronic condition. The equine vet can give you a better idea of how frequently your horse needs dental work after seeing your horse.

How is a horse dental exam done?

The equine vet starts by sedating your horse, then puts them into a harmless machine to hold their mouth open. We then use a powerful and unique drill bit to address teeth that are unevenly worn and catching soft tissue.

What should I expect after the vet has completed the dental work?

Your horse will feel woozy and may work its mouth to clear it of debris after the equine vet has finished. Our equine vet may ask you to withhold food for some time afterward, but your horse will eat once the sedation  has worn off and its mouth has cleared.
